Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis finally happened. Prograis was left in the dust after Haney delivered a masterful performance. Prograis only landed 36 punches on his opponent across the entire fight. This broke the previous record of 40 punches set by Edwin De Los Santos in his fight with Shakur Stevenson.
Haney has a history of neutralizing his opponent’s offense by clinching and dominating the fundamentals. However, the story was different this time. Haney was much more aggressive than usual, landing the harder shots often, which hurt Prograis. The victory made Haney the new WBC super lightweight champion, making him a two-division champion in the sport. The unanimous decision victory was much needed to solidify Haney’s reputation. This was mainly required because of his controversial decision victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko, who many thought had beaten Haney.
On the other hand, Haney denied that the judges gave him an unfair and undeserved win over Lomachenko. This is why when Haney faced Prograis on Saturday night. He fought with a swagger and a sense of purpose and delivered what could be the finest performance of his career. Haney, who is not known for his power punching, even knocked down Prograis in the third round.
With the victory, Haney entered the 140-pound division, acquired the WBC belt, and made his record 31-0. Furthermore, Haney continues to be compared to the legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., who retired undefeated.
