The Asian Boxing Championship is only hours away. It will be a test of the preparations of the Indian boxers ahead of the Tokyo Olympics 2021. The Indian team will be looking to better their record-shattering medal haul of 13 from the previous edition. A total of 19 Indian boxers, nine men and 10 women, will stake their claim for the top honors and among them is debutant Varinder Singh.

Varinder will be participating in his very first Asian Championship and is all set to leave his mark. The budding boxer shares that it was the dream of his late father to see him bring laurels to the country in the ring. And feels that the Championship is the perfect opportunity for him to fulfil his father’s dream.

“It was a tough time and it made me strong. I started training hard with focus and my game improved with it. It was my father’s dream to see me boxing for the country and making everyone proud. I am working hard to fulfill the dream and now I have a chance,” Dainik Bhaskar quoted Varinder. “I have always been calm inside the ring and I am going to do the same in the future.”

My focus has always been on individual games. These games give you great scope to prove your prowess and that is why I chose boxing. Boxing is now being embraced by all and boxers are getting everything, support, glamour and respect. If you excel in boxing, you also get all the benefits and we boxers are getting recognition everywhere.

Varinder is a big fan of former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather and follows him. Singh shares that he is yet to give professional boxing a thought as he has a long way to go in representing India and winning medals. Varinder Singh, who earlier used to participate in the 56 kg category, will be participating in the 60 kg category at the Asian Championship.

I have always followed him (Floyd Mayweather). I am his fan and I try to play like him. I adore his no excuse attitude and self belief. Although I follow him, I am yet to decide about entering professional boxing as I am yet to play for my country and win a lot of medals,” he signs off.
