Browns Advised to Cut Shedeur Sanders and Sign 25-Year-Old Quarterback Instead
Coach Jason Brown suggested that the Cleveland Browns should cut Shedeur Sanders.

Shedeur Sanders, once viewed as a top quarterback prospect, fell to the fifth round. The Cleveland Browns selected Sanders 144th overall last year.
The 24-year-old spent his rookie campaign battling for the backup job behind Joe Flacco with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Cleveland coaches selected Gabriel over Sanders.
Flacco went 1-3 before Gabriel took his spot under center. The former Oregon signal-caller lost five and won just one in his six starts. In Week 11, he suffered a concussion. This ruled him out of the next game, giving Sanders a chance to showcase his skills.
Against Tennessee in Week 14, Sanders completed 23 of 42 passes for 364 yards and threw 3 passing touchdowns. He finished his rookie campaign with three wins and four defeats. He averaged 56.6% pass completion, threw 7 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
After the season ended, the Browns hired Todd Monken as the new head coach. Monken hyped up Sanders in the initial months. But promised that every quarterback on the team would get equal chances to prove themselves.
Deshaun Watson returned from his 20-month-long ACL rehab. The former first-rounder emerged as an obstacle to Sanders and his ambition of earning the starter’s job in 2026.
Moreover, Monken and general manager Andrew Berry drafted Arkansas alum Taylen Green, increasing the number of quarterbacks on the roster to four. Monken waited until the end of the second preseason game to select Watson as his starter and Sanders as the backup.
On August 30, the Browns announced that they are keeping all four quarterbacks. Watson has one year left on his contract. If he plays well, Sanders’ chances of seeing game time will reduce significantly. Keeping that in mind, Coach Jason Brown, who appeared on the Netflix documentary Last Chance U, advised the Browns to cut Shedeur Sanders.
Cut [Shedeur] sanders sign him immediately. [The Browns].

Brown made the argument by retweeting a post from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. In the tweet, Rapoport shared that the Minnesota Vikings had cut quarterback Max Brosmer. The former Golden Gopher signed as an undrafted free agent last year.
NFL analyst makes an intriguing prediction about Shedeur Sanders’ future
After trading a king’s ransom to the Houston Texans to acquire Deshaun Watson in 2022, the Browns agreed to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed deal with the Pro Bowl signal-caller. Watson has missed more than 40 games since then, including the entirety of last year.

He’s slated to earn $46 million in 2026. He will enter free agency once the season ends. Sanders is touted to take over as the Browns’ number one in 2027, but ESPN’s Field Yates believes Sanders’ succession would not be that simple.
Speaking on his podcast, the ESPN analyst argued that if the Browns believed Sanders was their best quarterback, they would not have picked Watson over him. Yates projected the Browns could move on from the former Colorado star and draft a new quarterback.
I am going CJ Carr [Notre Dame], strongly built, accurate throwing quarterback—OK, not a dynamic athlete, but a good enough athlete, very mature young man. Give me CJ Carr at No. 3 for the Cleveland Browns.

Carr went 10-2 with the Fighting Irish in his sophomore year. Draft experts expect Carr to improve on that record this year and make a serious push for the championship. ESPN’s Josh Pete named Carr the third-best quarterback in college football behind Miami’s Darian Mensah and Ole Miss’s Trinidad Chambliss.
