Pat Freiermuth’s mother refuses to attend when his son and the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end play against the Cleveland Browns due to a bad experience six years ago. Freiermuth shared the reason recently.

The Steelers are 2-1 with wins over the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals. In Week 3, the Steelers travel to Cleveland to play the 2-1 Browns. Freiermuth’s mother won’t be at the stadium.

Yeah, Cleveland fans threw beer at my mother after my rookie year after I scored that touchdown, so I’m not a big fan of them.

Week 8 of 2021, the Steelers played the Browns at Huntington Bank Park. In the fourth quarter, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Freiermuth. It was the 27-year-old’s first touchdown of his NFL career. Pittsburgh won 15-10. Freiermuth finished his rookie year with 60 receptions, 497 yards, and 7 touchdowns.

Freiermuth’s not the only Steelers player who has had a bad experience in Cleveland. Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen will be traveling to Cleveland for the third time with the Steelers and seventh overall, having spent the first four seasons with rivals the Baltimore Ravens. Queen recalled being pelted with dog food in Cleveland.

When you’re playing at Cleveland, it’s always a weird game. There’s a weird feel, especially night games. They get a little rowdy. Fans be throwing dog food. It’s one of those types of games.

Pat Freiermuth is looking forward to a great game in Cleveland

While his mother won’t attend the game, Freiermuth still has a job to do as a Steeler. The Pittsburgh franchise played efficient football against the Bengals, and only a repeat of a similar performance would bring them glory in Cleveland.

Freiermuth is eagerly waiting to play in that game.

Going into the Dawg Pound on Thursday night. It’s going to be rowdy. They don’t like this very much. I think every single year I go to the Dawg Pound, I hear a whole other elevated version of trash talking. So, it’s fun. It’s always fun to be playing Cleveland, and I’m looking forward to a rambunctious crowd.

Freiermuth is 6-4 against the Browns in his career. He has recorded 24 receptions for 297 yards and 2 touchdowns.

In 2024, he signed a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension with the Steelers, keeping him with the team through the 2028 season. Since his debut, Freiermuth has caught 272 passes for 2784 yards and 23 touchdowns in 81 appearances.

Aaron Rodgers holds Pat Freiermuth in high regard

Freiermuth has seen several quarterbacks come and go through the Acrisure Stadium door since Roethlisberger retired. Aaron Rodgers took over as the Steelers’ quarterback last year and led the team to a 10-7 finish. But they were knocked out in the wild card round by the Houston Texans.

Rodgers returned to the Steelers for one final year and has looked sharp when given the chance to throw a pass. Freiermuth has been one of his top targets. He has targeted Freiermuth 14 times in the first three games, yielding 11 catches, 108 yards, and 1 touchdown.

It’s always good having Pat involved. Pat had a great training camp, so I’m not surprised by him getting a lot of looks, and he made contested catches.

6-foot-7, 264-pound giant Darnell Washington is the other tight end the Steelers love to unleash during games. Washington caught 3 passes for 67 yards and left a trail of Bengals players on the ground during a 47-yard run.

The Steelers are 83-65-1 against their AFC North rivals. They are 2.5-point favorites to win.
