After hearing that Shedeur Sanders is closing the gap on Deshuan Watson, the latest development in the Cleveland Browns quarterback saga makes a little sense. The Browns are reportedly discussing trading Sanders.

Tony Rizzo of ESPN Cleveland first broke the news on his show on Monday. Rizzo’s contacts inside the Browns facility are hearing that the brass is receiving calls from other NFL teams asking what they want in exchange for Sanders.

There are talks and ongoing calls about the availability of Shedeur Sanders.

The Browns drafted Sanders last year after he slipped to the fifth round. He was thrown into a horrible quarterback battle that included Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.

Pickett joined the Raiders, leaving the others to fight it out in training camp. Flacco won the job, with Gabriel earning the backup status. Browns fans weren’t happy. They would have preferred to see the former Colorado man as QB2.

Midway through the year, the Browns traded Flacco, and Gabriel was benched after posting a 1-6 record. Sanders finally had his chance to shine. He looked good in patches but failed to save the Browns’ year. He went 3-4 and threw more interceptions than touchdowns.

With the change of coaching, many assumed Sanders no longer needed to worry about bagging the starter’s job. However, they made one tiny mistake. They forgot about Deshaun Watson, who missed more than eighteen months due to a ruptured Achilles.

Watson had only made 19 appearances since his historic move from the Houston Texans. Despite missing so many games, Watson possesses the experience to thrive at the NFL level. That being said, Sanders improved quickly in Todd Monken’s system, making the QB race interesting.

All of a sudden, the Browns are thinking about trading Sanders. Rather than questioning its timing, Rizzo noted that this could lead to a positive development for the 24-year-old.

The [Cleveland] Browns, for whatever reason, don’t think he’s the guy. That’s my opinion. And I’m sure those saying, ‘What are you talking about? He’s in a quarterback battle.’ Okay, okay. But I’m going to say right now for the record, I don’t think that four quarterbacks are going to camp on July 28. I don’t. Nothing is imminent, but the calls are being made. And I think it’s probably in the best interest of both parties here.

Fans on social media seem to agree with Rizzo’s take.

Cleveland has been very unlucky in terms of finding the right quarterback. They don’t draft well, and even when they had the right player (Baker Mayfield), he was let go after a few seasons. Sanders has enough pedigree to be a regular starter in the league. Perhaps moving to a QB-friendly team could help his development.

Watson will turn 31 in September and is entering the final year of his contract. The Browns are already paying him the remaining money on his contract, so starting him in a few games or maybe the entire year makes sense.
