After LeBron James decided to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, the franchise rocketed up the odds charts of teams that could win the 2027 NBA Championship.

James may be 41 years old, but he still averaged more than 20 points, seven assists, and six rebounds as the third option for most of the time on the 2025-26 Los Angeles Lakers.

Those numbers might dwindle further when he is surrounded by All-Star talent such as Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and a rising young superstar in VJ Edgecombe.

However, at this stage of his career, the King merely wants to win a championship. With most of the statistical records in his back pocket, James might not give a hoot what his numbers look like at the end of the year.

But some believe the Akron native can still produce league-high assists, which could help make the 76ers into one of the most dominant teams in the league. That notion, though, is not something everyone agrees with.

So talent on paper don’t mean a whole lot. It means you got talent. That’s about all it means. It doesn’t mean or guarantee that you going to win the championship.

Byron Scott said on Fast Break

The three-time champion brought up the 2004 Lakers team that had the likes of Karl Malone and Gary Payton alongside Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and a strong bench.

That team lost to a Detroit Pistons roster that had no real superstars at the time. Instead, it was their cohesiveness that helped them win that David vs. Goliath battle. Therefore, even though LeBron James makes the Philadelphia 76ers the strongest team on paper, winning the championship is an entirely different deal.

LeBron James’ 2026 playoff effort compared to a Hall of Famer’s career

Even though Byron Scott has been generally talking negative things about LeBron James recently, he had a valid point about how the Philadelphia 76ers’ championship hopes have no relation to how good the team’s construct is.

The team has generally struggled to reach the deep end of the playoffs, which is why many believe that the postseason will define whether this retooled squad is a success. However, one analyst pointed out how the franchise can rely on the four-time champion when the playoffs arrive.

LeBron James this past year, in the playoffs, was better than Karl Malone ever was a day in his life in the NBA.

Max Kellerman said on the Game Over podcast

The former First Take contributor felt that the 6’9″ forward made a statement when he single-handedly led the severely depleted Lakers to win over a team that had a lot more talent on their roster.

Kellerman believes that LeBron James outperforming expectations despite having 23 seasons of mileage on his body is proof that he is not done performing at a high standard.

76ers will not have it easy in the East

No matter what LeBron James’ supporters say, it is not a given that his arrival makes the Philadelphia 76ers the de facto favorites to win the championship. First, they have to get through the other pretenders looking to upset the apple cart.

The East has a few teams, notably the Charlotte Hornets and the Washington Wizards, who might want to have their say in the playoffs. So will the retooled Brooklyn Nets, the Orlando Magic, and possibly the Indiana Pacers.

That is before the 76ers have to deal with the Boston Celtics, who will be out to prove that giving up Jaylen Brown for pennies was not a mistake. Then, when the Sixers get to the final stages, the likes of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat.

Those two teams may want to prove to James that he was wrong not to choose them. If the four-time league MVP manages to guide his new team past all that, they will finally have to upstage the New York Knicks.

If there is any team that screams ‘connected,’ it is them. As Byron Scott said, the powerhouse Lakers lost to a connected team in the Detroit Pistons. Therefore, the reigning champions will be James and his teammates’ biggest hurdle.
