Before they depart to play alongside each other for USA Basketball, Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers had one last regular-season battle to finish before the World Cup break.

The Indiana Fever are in the midst of a grueling road trip, facing three playoff teams and two struggling teams in eight days.

That places enormous pressure on any team, particularly one that has caught fire mid-season after starting the campaign with some inconsistency and injuries.

In their previous game at home, Clark executed a clinical second-half performance to help extend the Fever’s winning run, which has now continued into this road trip.

Such momentum is great news for any team battling against fatigue and away fans. That is also what helped the Fever keep pace with the Wings during the first half of their game at American Airlines Center.

With 10 seconds to go in the second quarter, the home team held a slight lead and wanted to preserve it heading into the half. As Caitlin Clark started to dribble once her teammate set the screen, Paige Bueckers grabbed her arm.

That threw the Fever guard off balance, but no foul was called. When the Wings guard tried to push Clark again, the latter threw her left arm in retaliation and even swung the ball away with considerable force.

Then, the nearest official called the foul. But by then, the crowd was roaring, and the three-time All-Star was visibly agitated. Bueckers was also seen telling her USA Basketball teammate and close friend to ‘calm down,’ which Clark did eventually.

Both Caitlin Clark & Paige Bueckers performed poorly

After both Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers headed towards the locker room and had time to blow off their steam, they had to get back and ensure their respective teams won this battle.

The home side came out with a different vigor, ensuring they were one step ahead of the Indiana Fever. Usually, this kind of situation brings out an epic comeback of sorts.

However, Clark’s night was not going well, as she struggled to find any rhythm on her shot. She also couldn’t get it going from distance, and her shots inside the paint weren’t falling either.

Bueckers fared no better, as she, too, struggled to find any consistency in her offense. Thankfully, for her, Wings teammates Jessica Shepard and Arike Ogunbowale did their bit to ensure the win stayed in the building.

The Fever had Kelsey Mitchell exploding for 21 points in the first half, but could not continue at that pace in the second. Without meaningful help, they couldn’t claw back the deficit and eventually succumbed to defeat.

Caitlin Clark’s struggles cost Kelsey Mitchell record-setting night

Kelsey Mitchell has been in such form that some believe she has edged Caitlin Clark in the race to win the MVP award. While most may not agree, there is no doubt that the 30-year-old has established herself as one of the best players in the league.

Eventually, she may not win the league MVP award, with Clark, Olivia Miles, and superstar A’ja Wilson firmly in the lead. But entering this game, Mitchell had tied the Aces’ forward in a record she held for a long time.

During their game against the Toronto Tempo, the Ohio native did enough to score more than 20 points before leaving due to an overheating body. In this game against the Wings, she scored more than that in the first half alone.

That became the 21st consecutive time a WNBA player has scored 20+ points in a game. It surpasses Wilson’s record of 20 such games, which means that Kelsey Mitchell will have her name on this record at least until the next season is past the midway point.
