Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, and the rest of the Indiana Fever entered the game against the New York Liberty knowing that their head coach, Stephanie White, was high on emotions.
Over the past 48 hours, the latter has faced a lot of abuse and trolling on social media after it seemed as if she was defending DiJonai Carrington‘s hard foul on Cunningham.
Fans questioned whether she had her players’ backs or whether she had an agenda against her bench star over recent political narratives that have engulfed the league.
White used the pre-game press conference to call out those trolls and reiterated her stance with her players. After the game, reporters asked both Cunningham and Clark what they had to say about their coach’s statement.
I think there is a spin, a lot of outside noise. Our locker room is good… We have each other’s backs. Coach loves us. She didn’t see the clip… DiJonai- she is a hell of a player, she’s a great defender. She coached her for, I don’t know, how many years in Connecticut… Me and Steph, and great. Steph is great with all of us. It’s really the outside noise that’s trying to distract us, but we’re good.
Sophie Cunningham said
The Missouri native was clear that it is just the outside noise trying to divide the locker room. She and Stephanie White are in a good space, and nothing anyone says can change it.

Proud of this Indiana Fever team and that they stand behind and beside each other

At the same time, she praised DiJonai Carrington’s defense. That could be the response that shuts this discourse down for good, because Cunningham praising the Sky star and reiterating her relationship with White may not be what the trolls want.
Caitlin Clark points out how the ‘world loves to hate’
After Sophie Cunningham threw her support behind her head coach, reporters asked Caitlin Clark about her opinion on the vitriol Stephanie White has faced these past few days.

Our world is just like, we love to hate, we love to divide. That’s all we wanna do. Nobody wants to see each other succeed. That’s a painful thing for myself to watch. We need to do a better job uplifting each other.
Caitlin Clark said
The point guard added that her head coach, much like herself, has feelings. No matter how thick skin a person has, there comes a moment when everyone breaks. She has experienced those moments herself. Earlier, it was her coach’s turn, and the Iowa native reiterated that it is alright to let those emotions flow.
At the same time, she believes that this entire situation has come about because most people just want to tear everything down. Instead of supporting the players, the coach, and the team, Caitlin Clark believes that those trolls enjoy bringing in hate.
Caitlin Clark and her teammates wanted to win the game for Stephanie White
Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever teammates won their game against the New York Liberty in impressive fashion. After finishing the contest with a 106-92 score, the superstar guard revealed what their motivation was.
I can assure you there was no way we were losing this game tonight, and I told her that before the game… It’s tough. That’s my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game, that made me a little sick, to be honest… That’s our head coach. We’re going to ride for her. We’re always going to have her back.
Clark said
This means the players were fully aware of all the vitriol being spread on social media and made a statement by winning the game for White. There still might be some who want to cash in on the coach’s words, but Clark made it clear, and so did a nodding Sophie Cunningham, that the players are behind their head coach.
