The New York Giants sent Cam Skattebo a clear message about changing his approach to football. Learning from his past mistakes, the second-year running back is ready to give his maximum effort on the gridiron.
The Giants drafted Skattebo to fill the massive hole left by Saquon Barkley after he switched allegiance to the Eagles. In his first season, the fourth-round draft pick rushed 101 times for 410 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and scored 5 touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes and scored two touchdowns before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
The Giants selected Skattebo over others after seeing his old-school, hard-hitting playing style. But he also came with baggage. Occasionally, he made boneheaded mistakes, like banging his head on the wall before kickoff or taking unnecessary risks on the field of play.
Those continued well into his debut campaign. The Giants front office was livid after he performed a backflip weeks after undergoing ankle surgery. Although he apologized, the 24-year-old set a precedent.
Prior to the tie against Washington, Skattebo’s best numbers came against Dallas on opening day. He had 81 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries. He crossed 60 yards just once in the following five appearances.
John Harbaugh threw Skattebo a curveball last week. He had zero carries in the loss to the Saints. Skattebo admitted that “he got punished” for his past transgressions. Speaking to reporters, he elaborated on his previous comments. He said on Thursday via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan:
I got a little ahead of myself. I lost the main purpose of the game, I was to take care of the ball at that moment, and I lost [it’s] just understanding the situation and circumstances, taking care of the ball and I’ll be fine.
Can Skattebo says the Giants cutting Najee Harris was a message to everyone: “Nobody is safe. It’s as simple as that.” https://t.co/1TVQI51UgJ

In six games, Skattebo carried the ball 81 times for 294 yards and scored one touchdown. He has yet to score a receiving touchdown. Skattebo understands that he’s under a lot of pressure. He added:
When we go on the field, if we’re not performing, we understand there’s a possibility of not being here—If I don’t perform, I know there’s a possibility of me not being here… Nobody is safe.
In the meantime, the Giants released Najee Harris. The former Steeler complained about the lack of workload before the Saints game. He only got two yards on four carries. The Giants cut him afterward.
The Giants are linked to All-Pro running back amidst Cam Skattebo’s struggles
Besides Skattebo, the Giants have Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary on the active roster. However, league reports indicate that Harbaugh is eyeing more trades.

One player who could be available for a trade is All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor. With the Colts being 2-4, analysts believe the front office will be willing to listen to offers from other teams before the trade deadline
Taylor has 492 yards and 7 touchdowns on 122 carries this year. The former Badger scored 18 touchdowns (second time in his career) and 1,585 yards on 323 carries (most in the league) in 2025. He has three Pro Bowls to his name, aside from an All-Pro selection (2021).
Imagine how dangerous the Giants offense could be if they added Jonathan Taylor to the mix 👀 https://t.co/iHATIuUtKv

However, there’s a pretty big catch. JT signed a two-year, $44 million extension in the offseason. In addition to giving up hefty draft capital, the Giants would have to take on JT’s contract. Taylor would improve the Giants’ running game.
