Cam Skattebo received severe criticism for performing a needless backflip outside of the New York Giants training grounds. The second-year running back has decided to be more careful in the future.

Skattebo joined the Giants at their spring training camp, where he acknowledged that it was a “dumb” move by him to do a backflip on stage because not too long ago he had suffered an ankle injury. Skattebo told reporters Friday at the Giants’ training camp in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia:

Obviously I do some dumb things here and there, but I learn from it. My coach talked to me, told me how he felt, and I learned from it. And will I go do that backflip again? Probably not. We live and we learn, and we move on.

In July, Skattebo went on the stage at the Fanatics Fest in Vegas and attempted a backflip in front of the camera. He nearly made the perfect landing, but he slipped at the last moment. Although no harm was done, the Giants fandom criticized the Arizona State graduate for his reckless behavior.

Skattebo suffered a severe ankle fracture while facing the Philadelphia Eagles last season. He missed the final seven games. He rushed for 410 yards and scored 5 touchdowns from 101 rushes in eight games. He also caught 24 passes for 207 yards and scored a couple of receiving touchdowns.

Skattebo’s backflips became his trademark during his Arizona State days. He also tried a couple last year during gamedays.

Back in May of this year, Skattebo successfully performed one at Giants teammate Brian Burns’ celebrity softball game. In the aftermath of his slip at Fanatics Fest, the Giants front office reached out to Skattebo with a piece of advice. They have strictly demanded that Skattebo not perform another backflip leading up to the season. Giants head coach John Harbaugh told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan:

[Cam Skattebo] and I have had five or six really good conversations since he got back [to the facility at minicamp]… It’s part of the ongoing process. Just communication, be on the same page, trying to be the best at everything we do. He’s great. He wants to be great. He listens. He talks. He tells you what he thinks. It’s all good.

Skattebo is an entertainer, and he loves to bring that flair to football. Doing backflips is just part of his moxy. He can’t do backflips outside of a football field, but he’s allowed on the gridiron. And if chance arrives, he will do it for the fans. Skattebo said:

I’m going to continue to be who I am and hopefully make everybody happy around me, continue to be positive. If a kid wants a backflip, he’ll see the backflip when it’s touchdown time.

The Giants drafted Skattebo 105th overall last year. The Giants also have Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary on the first-team running back depth chart.
