A section of the Tennessee Titans fanbase is losing patience with Cam Ward. Following the Titans’ third straight defeat to start the season, Ward’s sister, Chantel, alleged that some overzealous fans have threatened and harassed their family members.
Ward’s transition from college to the NFL hasn’t been smooth. He won three games during his debut campaign with very few positives to show on tape. Robert Saleh promised to bring the best out of the former Miami man, but three weeks in, the Titans offense has averaged just 15 points.
Ward was presented with a great chance to win late on Sunday, but a lapse in decision-making cost Tennessee its first win. After the game, Chantel posted a long message on social media, revealing how some Titans fans have been unwelcoming and downright cruel to Cam and his family members.
The fact I even have to post this is diabolical. People see the football games; [they see] the wins, the losses, the interceptions, the touchdowns, the press conferences, and everything that happens on the field. What they don’t see is what comes with it for the people who love these players when the game is over. After games, people come directly into my DMs on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with threats, hate, bullying, personal attacks, and disrespect toward me and my family – all over football.

Football and rowdy fans are a horrible combination. Most fans celebrate wins, or shake their head when the team loses, and ultimately move on to the next game. But every team has a section of supporters who go a bit overboard with the entire ‘X team till die’ lifestyle. They can’t take losing well.
As the quarterback is the most recognizable and highest-paid position in sports, they become a target of online trolls and harassment. Often, that anger spills over to their near and dear ones.
Criticize football all you want. Criticize the performance, criticize the decisions. That comes with the territory. But threats, harassment, bullying and attacking someone’s family will never be ‘just part of the game.

Chantel brings forth a good point. Fans should only stick to critiquing the players’ on-field performance. But in the age of social media, an athlete is prone to undergo intense scrutiny regardless of the outcome.
For instance, Caleb Williams led the Bears to their first playoff win in years, yet fans still taunt him for his fondness for applying nail polish and wearing earrings. Williams was mercilessly trolled during his final year of college for crying with his mother after a crucial regular-season defeat. It’s a vicious cycle that doesn’t draw enough attention.
The Titans are on a losing streak
Tennessee drafted Ward first overall. They could have selected Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Louisville’s Tyler Shough, but took Ward as he suited their system better.

Ward went 3-14 last year. He threw 323 completions for 3169 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He was sacked 55 times (most in the league), fumbled 11 times, and lost possession 7 times.
The Titans added Ohio State star Carnell Tate in this year’s draft to make the offense more lethal. But it hasn’t lived up to expectations. With defeats against Saleh’s former employers, the New York Jets on opening day and the Philadelphia Eagles the following week, the Titans were buried at the bottom of the AFC South.
They weren’t favored to win against the Giants despite Jaxson Dart’s absence. The Giants did not need Dart; they won 12-7 after Ward threw an interception in the final moments on Sunday.
The Titans have now gone five games without tasting victory (stretching back to last season). Up next, they face the Baltimore Ravens, who defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Brazil.
