Conner Weigman‘s return to the Texas A&M Aggies starting lineup wasn’t great. In fact, it went as horribly as one can imagine against the 7th best team in the nation, Notre Dame.

Despite a 3-1 start, Weigman missed a chunk of the 2023 season after suffering an injury to his foot. Max Johnson took over from him for the rest of the campaign. However, head coach Mike Elko reinstated Weigman to the starting job after Johnson transferred to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the off-season.

There was a massive expectation for the 20th-ranked Aggies, pushing for at least a bowl game. However, they got off to the worst possible start as Wiegman flopped in his comeback game. It was so bad that the cameras caught him puking in mid-game.

Weigman threw two picks in the game and finished with only 12 completions from 30, for 100 yards. One of those picks was especially bad. He overthrew 6 foot 6 wide receiver Jahdae Walker without any pass coverage, handing the ball straight to Notre Dame’s strong safety, Adon Shuler.

One of the cameras caught Elko shouting at his offensive coordinator Colin Klein to make Weigman run the ball instead of passing it. The game ended with a 13-23 score which on paper doesn’t seem too bad but the underlying numbers tell a different story. They ran the ball for just 146 yards with Le’Veon Moss leading the pack with 20 carries for just 70 yards (3.5 yards per carry) and 1 rushing touchdown.

Despite the horrible performance against Notre Dame, Mike Elko defended quarterback Conner Weigman

The Aggies players looked defeated, physically and mentally after the game, and the boos inside Kyle Field did not help either. However, Coach Elko claimed it was a tough day and a result to digest, but gave the 21-year-old the benefit of the doubt.

We got to go back to the tape and find out to put him in better situations to get him comfortable. He was not in rhythm, and there was nothing easy. We kept trying. Just couldn't get there.
Mike Elko said after the game as per Sports Illustrated

In his view, they lost the game as a team, and putting the finger on just their quarterback is never the correct way of handling things.

I told the locker room for us to get this program over the hump, we have to put ourselves in the position to play the game the way we need to. We didn't do that tonight.
Mike Elko added

The Aggies have a chance to go on a winning streak with 4 easy ties back-to-back against McNeese State, Florida Gators who lost 41-17 in their week 1 game against the Miami Hurricanes, then Bowling Green and Arkansas Razorbacks before facing 11th-ranked Missouri Tigers.
