Philadelphia 76ers star Cameron Payne, who was once asked by LeBron James to stay humble, gets arrested for giving police false report
Cameron Payne was once considered to take over the mantle from Chris Paul as the lead point guard of the Phoenix Suns. His game was good, and he was supposed to be a future star. However, his rise to stardom led to clashes with LeBron James due to ego issues. Subsequently, he was involved in trades that eventually brought him to the Philadelphia 76ers. Now, Payne has been arrested.
TMZ Sports reported that the 6′ 3″ guard was arrested by Scottsdale Police in Arizona early in the morning. Police were called to investigate after complaints of a disturbance was reported. Payne was arrested on the scene and charged with refusal to provide a truthful name. He was also charged with one count of false report to law enforcement. However, they released the Philadelphia 76ers guard from custody a while later.
It seems Payne still has acquaintances in Arizona from his playing days with the Phoenix Suns. This incident might not have kept him in prison, but it will dent his reputation around the league. The NBA and the teams do not prefer players getting entangled with law enforcement.
Cameron Payne was a first-round pick but struggled to find stability in the NBA, moving between G-League teams and leagues abroad. Then when he signed on with the Suns, he was revered for his pace and drives to the rim. He flourished as Chris Paul‘s understudy and went on to score career highs in scoring as well as assists. That is what probably led him to consider himself a star and the subsequent altercation with LeBron James.
LeBron James once asked Cameron Payne to be humble
Back when Cameron Payne was playing with the Phoenix Suns, they clashed with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the 2021 NBA playoffs. Payne featured heavily and at one point was taunting the four-time champion. In response, James replied to him while sitting on the bench asking him to be ‘humble’.
Stay humble now. You was at home a year and a half ago. Now you wanna pop off. Don't do that.LeBron James said
James’ words could not be truer for the-then emerging guard. Cameron Payne hardly featured in the Philadelphia 76ers rotation this season.
In fact, once the season finishes, Payne will officially be a free agent. A not-so-great scenario considering he was once thought off to be good to start for a team. But the landscape of basketball can change very quickly. James was only reminding him of that.
Now with this arrest, it will be interesting to see how potential suitors approach Cameron Payne. He is a decent backup point guard but sometimes off-court issues can make things complicated.
