Canelo Alvarez is set for his highly anticipated second fight of 2025, taking place this weekend at the Allegiant Stadium. The Mexican superstar faces undefeated multi-division champion Terence Crawford in one of boxing’s most hyped and competitive matches this year. Although Alvarez enters the bout as the betting favorite, experts continue to express concerns regarding his advancing age and overall stamina.

Alvarez, now 35 years old, has already competed in an astounding 67 professional bouts, facing numerous tough and dangerous opponents. The decorated Mexican champion is clearly considered past his prime, having not faced another superstar opponent for several years. In a recent interview, boxing sensation Ryan Garcia discussed the upcoming fight, strongly pointing out the same concerning reality.

My problem with Canelo is his intensity. He doesn’t have the same intensity that he used to have, and I think that’s gonna be the biggest issue for me. Can he still counterpunch? Yes. Can he still be slick? Yes. But does he have the energy and the intensity that he used to have when he was younger, or even when he fought For me, it’s like, is he going to be able to have that second, third effort? Because that’s the problem he has.

The last truly competitive fight that Alvarez gave fans was against Caleb Plant, which he won via TKO finish. Afterward, Alvarez moved up to the light heavyweight division but suffered a decisive defeat against Dmitry Bivol, raising significant questions.

Although Alvarez still possesses dangerous knockout power, his declining speed and technique make ‘Bud’ a particularly challenging opponent to overcome. This was really evident in his bouts against Jaime Munguia, Edgar Berlanga, and Jermell Charlo. The legendary Mexican was able to knock them down, but couldn’t secure a stoppage victory.

On the other hand, Crawford is moving up to face Alvarez, recently posting photos looking absolutely shredded and remarkably prepared. Both fighters have been discussing this potential mega fight for years, and fans are thrilled that it has finally materialized. Much of the credit goes to Saudi promoter Turki Alalshikh, who secured Alvarez with a multi-million dollar four-fight deal earlier.

The fight will stream live on Netflix, and experts predict it could shatter several records. UFC CEO Dana White is promoting the bout, calling it the biggest since Floyd Mayweather faced Manny Pacquiao and even Conor McGregor. This monumental event also serves as the official launch of White’s TKO Boxing, sparking massive hype for the promotion’s future.

A loss to Terence Crawford would not erase Alvarez’s legacy, but it could slightly shift how critics evaluate his career. If he loses, fans may argue that age or weight played a factor, while others might view Crawford as his defining rival. Nevertheless, both boxers seemed organized before the fight with no bad blood, but showed intensity during the official face-off.
