Hours after Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner played the China Open final, the arch-rivals traveled together to Shanghai for their next tournament. While they were foes in Beijing, Alcaraz stated that sharing a private plane with Sinner shows how unique the sport is.
Alcaraz produced an extraordinary performance to come from behind and beat Sinner 6(6)-7, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the China Open final. It was his third consecutive win over the Italian and he took a 6-4 lead in their head-to-head record. Sinner was hoping to defend the title and win his seventh of the year, but it was Alcaraz who claimed his fourth of the season.
After an exciting performance by the two, they took the same flight to Shanghai. They arrived on Wednesday (October 2) for the Shanghai Masters, the same day the tournament kicked off. Sinner’s coach Simone Vagnozzi took to social media to share a picture of Alcaraz and Sinner on the private jet.
During an interview, Alcaraz was asked how he felt about being on the same flight with Sinner. The Spaniard revealed that despite it being ‘weird’, it also showed how unique the sport was.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are scheduled to begin their Shanghai Masters campaign on Friday (October 4). The former will play Shang Juncheng while the latter will face Taro Daniels in the second round.
Carlos Alcaraz reveals Davis Cup and Laver Cup performances helped motivate him to win the China Open
Carlos Alcaraz has admitted that the Davis Cup and Laver Cup performances helped him get motivated ahead of the Asian swing. The Spaniard was humbled during the North American hard court swing, where he lost twice and won just one match.
However, rather than resting, the 21-year-old sought to work on his game. He helped Spain earn a quarterfinal ticket in the Davis Cup by finishing at the top of Group B. Alcaraz also played an integral role in Team Europe’s fifth Laver Cup victory last month.
The four-time Major winner has admitted that those two tournaments gave him much-needed confidence heading into the China Open.
Alcaraz is now on a nine-match win streak and dropped only one set at the China Open. He will be looking forward to continuing his form at the Shanghai Masters, where he exited in the Round of 16 last year.
