Spanish tennis ace Carlos Alcaraz has continued his great run in the 2024 season. After winning two of the four Grand Slam titles and the Laver Cup, the Spaniard snatched the China Open title from his biggest rival on the tour, Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz beat the World No. 1 in three sets on Wednesday (October 2) to win his 16th tour-level title.
With this win, Alcaraz also improved his numbers against the top-ranked players on the tour this year. The Spaniard already had phenomenal numbers against his top rivals before the match against Sinner. It has only gotten better after Alcaraz beat the Italian 6(6)-7, 6-4, 7-6(3) in three hours and 21 minutes.
It was Alcaraz’s third win in as many matches against Sinner in 2024 and he extended his lead in the head-to-head record to 6-4. Apart from this, Alcaraz’s overall win percentage against top-ranked players also improved with his China Open triumph.
This season, Alcaraz has a superb 11-3 (78.6%) record against Top 10 players (including Laver Cup) and an even more emphatic 8-1 (88.9%) record against opponents ranked in the Top 5. He also has a 4-1 (80%) record against players in the Top 3 of the ATP Rankings. The 21-year-old’s only defeat against a Top 5 opponent came at the Paris Olympics when Novak Djokovic defeated him in the gold medal match.
Alcaraz’s only other losses against Top 10 opposition this year came against Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open quarterfinals and against Andrey Rublev in the Madrid Open quarterfinals. He holds a stellar 34-18 (65.4%) career record against opponents ranked in the top 10.
Carlos Alcaraz loves his matchups against Jannik Sinner
The numbers suggest that Carlos Alcaraz is ahead of his rivals. However, Jannik Sinner is not too far behind and the two players are seemingly getting into a rivalry that is going to last for a long time. Both Sinner and Alcaraz love their matchups and the Spaniard admitted that their rivalry is good for the sport as well.
Sinner echoed the same thoughts and claimed that the two players always push each other to the limits. The numbers also indicate the same. In the ten matches played so far, only three have been won in straight sets. The last two matches, at the China Open and Roland Garros, have been intensely-fought contests.
