The New York Mets lost again on Thursday. The National League East side suffered a 4-3 defeat and got swept by the Chicago Cubs. Following their 6th successive loss, manager Carlos Mendoza sounded off on the defensive errors by the team.
The New York side entered the game at Citi Field on Thursday, hoping to end a 5-game losing run and avoid the sweep. On Wednesday, they had a poor day in the field and committed 6 infield errors.
Infielders Mark Vientos, Marcus Semien, Francisco Lindor, and Bo Bichette all committed errors. Vientos and Semien were charged with 2 errors each.
The 6 errors they committed were their joint-worst in franchise history. As they looked to bounce back on Thursday, the team had more defensive mistakes.
With the game tied at 0-0, starting pitcher Freddy Peralta entered the 6th inning in cruise control. However, one throwing error changed everything.
After Dansby Swanson hit a routine grounder, shortstop Ronny Mauricio picked it up. All he had to do from there was make a routine throw at first base to Mark Vientos. He ended up making a low throw, which Vientos was unable to gather.

Later in the inning, there was another error, this time in the outfield. Right fielder Carson Benge made a mistake while trying to collect the ball following a line drive by Alex Bregman.
Peralta ended up throwing 30 more pitches and gave up 3 runs (all unearned). While the Mets fought back through home runs from Eric Wagaman and Jared Young, they lost the game 4-3 after extra innings.

After the game, manager Carlos Mendoza opened up about the defensive errors. He simply stated that the team needs to make these routine plays.
It’s just routine plays that are costing us. At this level, you expect to make plays like that, those are routine plays. You understand that they’re not gonna be perfect, but those are as routine as it gets and teams are making us pay for it.

Carlos Mendoza claims Mets could be sellers at deadline following another poor season
The New York Mets are struggling once again. After the Chicago Cubs completed a 4-game sweep of them, there were some big questions raised. One of them was whether the team could be sellers at the trade deadline. Carlos Mendoza claimed that it could happen.

Given the offseason they had, very few would have envisioned the Mets to be in such a place. However, their recent slump has left them with a 34-47 record, 13 games behind .500 at the halfway stage of the season.
When asked by the reporters if the team could be sellers and trade some of their players, Mendoza admitted that this could happen. He, though, claimed that they were not thinking about this and that their job was to win games.
That’s the reality, especially if we don’t start playing better. We’ve got to be honest here. But we can’t be thinking about ‘what if.’ Our job is to do what we need to do now.
Carlos Mendoza said as per SNY

This comes after the team traded away David Peterson. The veteran relief pitcher was traded to the Cubs in the middle of the series.

For the Mets, their next series is against the Philadelphia Phillies. Last weekend, they lost 2 out of the 3 games against them. With each defeat, the pressure also increases on the shoulders of Mendoza, with several fans calling for his sacking.
