Champions League 2020/21: Chelsea vs Rennes


Chelsea defeated Rennes 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League at Stamford Bridge. Timo Werner scored two penalties in the first half plus Tammy Abraham scored again in the second half.
Kai Havertz missed the game due to testing positive for Covid-19. Frank Lampard confirmed he is spending time in self isolation.
First Half

Rennes and Chelsea both started off the blocks pretty quickly and took attacking shape. However Chelsea were presented with the golden chance just 9 minutes in.
Dalbert tapped Werner inside the box as the striker cut back in. Instead of Jorginho , Timo Werner took the penalty and just managed to score.
Chelsea were awarded yet another penalty in the 40th minute. And once again the person in fault was defender Dalbert. After consulting with the VAR, referee shower him a second yellow card and off he went.
Timo Werner stepped up to the penalty spot once again and this time made no mistake to smash it in. 2-0 to Chelsea and two goals for Werner who now has 2 goals in 3 matches in the competition.
Second Half
The blues asserted their dominance very early in the second half. With Rennes down to ten men there was a lot of space for Chelsea to exploit and it was beginning to show. Ben Chilwell was able to race down the left and swing in crosses and Hakim Ziyech missed a pretty easy opportunity.
However when the cross came from Reece James, Tammy Abraham was there to tap the ball in. Ziyech freed up Reece James on the right and the full back swung in a beautiful low cross for Abraham to poke it in.
Eduoard Mendy was called into some late action as he had to scramble actions the goal to make a low save to the left. The match ended 3-0 with hey another clean sheet in the bag for Mendy.
