Atalanta had played their first Champions League game in their original home Bergamo. They played their home matches in San Siro as their stadium was being renovated. In this group D fixture Atalanta and Ajax shared the spoils as they drew 2-2. Liverpool took the top position in the group with six points over their win against Midtjylland.
Ajax were brimming with confidence as they broke their own highest goals scored record in a single match as they defeated VVV Venlo 13-0. Lassina Traore scored five goals in that match and was involved in this match too. Atalanta had lost their last two Serie A matches and was hoping to arrest their slide here. They made the quarterfinals last season and will be hoping to progress further now.
Captain Dusan Tadic scored from a penalty and gave Ajax a lead. Lassina Traore then scored another goal as they lead by two goals before the end of the first half itself. Atalanta’s defence was at mistake in both the goals as Ajax capitalised on it. This draw meant that Atalanta slipped to second place in a tough Group D. They face an injury hit Liverpool in a double header next and will aim to take back the top spot.
In the second half Duvan Zapata scored a quickfire double with assists from Alejandro Gomez and Mario Paali. Duvan Zapata’s achievements are being overlooked as Robert Lewandowski runs riot all over Europe. He has 5 goals from 10 matches and that’s a splendid figure for any striker!
He will be ready to fancy his chances against a Liverpool that has only one centre-back left in Joe Gomez. The double header between Atalanta and Liverpool is sure to produce tons of goals as both of them are attacking teams.
