In Short
  • Charles Barkley humorously critiques the fluctuating media narratives about the Lakers' performance.
  • He acknowledges the team's recent nine-game winning streak but still doubts their championship potential.
  • Barkley believes the Lakers lack the depth to compete with top teams in the Western Conference.

Charles Barkley does not mince his words, whether he is in front of a camera or out in public. Over the past few years, a lot of those choice words have been kept reserved for the Los Angeles Lakers.

They may have won the 2020 bubble championship and have since been battling to fight for another, but the Round Mound of Rebound has not seen them as contenders.

Their constant roster movements may have aggravated their situation, but the Lakers’ falling short has continued to help Barkley explain his opinion with results.

There have been times when the Hall of Famer has praised the franchise for bringing enough talent to help LeBron James and his teammates.

But even after Luka Doncic arrived, the former Philadelphia 76ers star has maintained that they are far away from being contenders. Time and again, his own colleagues have countered his argument, but Barkley has stuck to it.

It’s almost comical when you wake up in the morning and you watch TV. Three months ago, it was the worst trade in sports history. Two weeks ago, Nico (Harrison) was right, the Lakers stink, blah blah blah. Two weeks later, they are playing great.

Charles Barkley said

While saying this on Jim Rome‘s show, both the NBA great and the broadcaster were laughing about how the narratives surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers keep changing week after week, as per their results, to the point where it has become comical.

Luka’s been playing great, he’s been unbelievable. Austin has played great, and LeBron is probably the best third wheel in NBA history.

The 63-year-old believes that the trio of Austin Reaves, Luka Doncic, and LeBron James is playing well, which has fueled the Lakers to their nine-game winning streak.

He kept aside special praise for the league’s all-time leading scorer, stating that James’ unique ability to do everything for the team makes him the NBA’s best third option.

With his experience and skill, Barkley believes that LeBron James will benefit the team playing in purple and gold when they reach the postseason.

Charles Barkley reiterated that the ball should be in Doncic and Reaves’ hands, and the oldest player in the league should focus on finishing and playing the role he currently excels in.

Charles Barkley still does not think the Lakers are championship contenders

Charles Barkley does not throw praise unless he feels the player, or the team, fully deserves it. While talking about the Los Angeles Lakers, after praising Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James, the Inside the NBA analyst went back to his original thought.

I don’t think they can win the championship. I don’t think they can beat OKC, I don’t think they can beat Denver (Nuggets), I don’t think they can beat the Spurs. I think the Rockets and Minnesota would be an interesting series. But they are playing great.

This means the Leeds, Alabama, native still does not consider the league’s most popular franchise has it in them to contend for the championship this season.

He believes that in the Western Conference alone, there are better candidates to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy this year, and that the Lakers will find it difficult to overpower them in a playoff series.

Even though the franchise is in third place, Barkley does not believe they have it in them to win the title this year. It seems he is not wavering from his view, as he has maintained that the team does not have the depth or construct to be a champion.
