In June 2023, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan dropped a huge bomb on the golfing world when he announced a merger deal with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the body that backs LIV Golf. Since then there have been several delays in the way for the deal to go through.
Former NBA star Charles Barkley has now slammed the two tours for this While appearing as a guest on the SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio’s Gravy and the Sleeze program, Barkley did not hold back. The 61-year-old claimed he had no idea what the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been doing regarding the issue.
I wish these fools would quit screwing around, LIV and the PGA Tour. I don’t know what the hell they’re doing. They’re so stupid. These guys are so idiotic. They need to be playing against each other [more than] the majors. It would be beneficial for both tours.

Like many other golf fans, Barkley is still waiting for an official update regarding the merger deal. Currently, there is no timeline set for the deal to go through. However, golfer Rory McIlroy thinks that it could come through soon.
Rory McIlroy envisions PGA Tour-LIV Golf deal to go through by end of 2024
With each passing day, the question in the minds of golf fans remains the same: when will the big merger deal go through? Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who is currently part of the PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee, is optimistic that the merger deal will go through by the end of 2024.

Before the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship earlier this month, the golfer claimed that business deals of this scale take time. He, however, stated that the deal would “definitely” be finalized before the end of this year. McIlroy is reported to be acting as the peacekeeper of the deal.
Definitely before the year’s end. Maybe it is going too slow for the people who follow golf, but I think in the business world deals of this size take time. You know, you are talking about billions of dollars changing hands, different jurisdictions in the Middle East, U.S., and Europe. I think we’ll know a lot more by year’s end. We’re in October so hopefully [there’s] three months to get something done

Another major twist in this merger talks revolves around Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf. As per recent reports, the PIF is looking to replace the 69-year-old as the CEO. Whether this could have any effect on the merger deal remains to be seen.
