2021 saw NASCAR welcoming the biggest celebrity team owner in the series’ history, when Michael Jordan fielded 23XI Racing with Denny Hamlin as co-owner. The NBA legend has had a massive impact on the sport within five years, with dominant wins, the mega Airspeed race shop and the anti-trust lawsuit that made charter’s permanent.

Hendrick Motorsports’ 2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott shared his thoughts on the impact of MJ on his appearance on the Outta Pocket podcast. He asserted that having the basketball champion has been great for the sport and declared the sport needs the competitiveness the legends bring to the sport. The veteran also highlighted the childlike joy Jordan has while in the garage.

I think that it is a great thing for us as an industry to have somebody like MJ be involved. To me, the coolest part about him is genuine joy that he gets from racing is so childlike. I love it. I also think it’s a little bit of a competitive thing for him, like he’s a super competitor and he wants to win. And I think that our sport loves that. I think our sport needs that.

Chase Elliott said via Outta Pocket with RGIII podcast.

Further talking about the point, the veteran asserted that the key things that makes Michael Jordan special is him being true to himself. Chase Elliott pointed out that passion and love MJ has for the sport, owing to the fact that he grew up as a NASCAR fan in Charlotte, has helped him make 23XI one of the most successful team in the Next-Gen era.

Kind of going back to us staying true to what we’re doing, I think that the biggest thing that works for Michael being involved is that he is being true to himself by being a part of our sport because he loves it that much and I think that’s why it works. I think that’s why they’re doing well too.

When people walk up to get you to sign something and they stick their Sharpie in their mouth to open the cap, and then hand (the Sharpie) to you. I’m like “Ehhhhh…” That one always really … that’s a tough one. It happens a lot. And I’m like, “Man, I have a Sharpie,” but the color I have is not sufficient, so then we’re grabbing a (different) one. That one for sure is not ideal.

Chase Elliott said.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver seems to be concerned about the hygiene factor is such encounters and he is right be careful about his health, considering the team and sponsors pays millions to see him win races on the track. But at the same time the autographs sessions are part of race week and Elliott will have to experience similar moments for a lot of times.
