Victor Wembanyama is coming off a historic 2025-26 campaign. Drafted by the San Antonio Spurs as the number one pick in the 2023 NBA draft, Wembanyama broke a number of records in just his third season in the league.

After impressing the NBA world in the regular season by finishing in second place in a highly competitive Western Conference standings, the Spurs center led his team to the NBA Finals in his first-ever playoffs. Unfortunately, his dream run came to an end after losing to the New York Knicks in five games.

Health has always been a concern for Wembanyama since stepping foot into the NBA. He suffered a serious injury last year that could have derailed his NBA career. One player who knows a thing or two about the injury is Chris Bosh. The two-time champion’s career was cut short due to blood-clotting issues.

Take your medicine … because it only takes one more time. It happened one more time for me. It happened twice, and I couldn’t play anymore.

Coincidentally, it is the same issue that ended Wembanyama’s 2024-25 campaign abruptly and nearly plagued his career. The blood-clotting troubles have derailed several players’ careers in the past, with Chris Bosh being one of the biggest names.

Wembanyama suffered a similar health scare last year, which restricted him to just 46 appearances. Many feared that he would suffer a similar fate as Bosh, but those rumors were eventually dismissed by a sports doctor.

The French superstar opened up about the time he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. It was a difficult moment in a very young NBA career. He revealed that basketball had to take a back seat as he focused on his health and his future. However, it is good to see Bosh giving him some important words of advice and not letting his guard down.

Chris Bosh nearly died last January after suffering a pulmonary embolism

DVT is not a common occurrence among players. Unfortunately, this rare and serious condition has afflicted quite a few players in the past. Bosh was forced to retire in 2015 after suffering from it for the second time.

To emphasize how life-threatening this condition can be, Bosh had a huge health scare earlier this year. He revealed that he almost passed away in January after suffering another pulmonary embolism.

I had an episode in January. I almost dropped dead pretty much and came back to life. I had another pulmonary embolism. It was in January. I was in the hospital for a week. But, take your medicine. So, I’m taking my medicine every day, taking care of myself every day, and watching it. No symptoms came either, you got to deal with it for the rest of your life. I thought I was past it. I am not. It’s just making sure I stay on top of my regimen.

DeAndre Jordan and Brandon Ingram have been diagnosed with DVT as well. Both players were forced to spend time out of basketball due to this cardiovascular irregularity.

The 22-year-old broke a number of playoff records in his first appearance and became the first-ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year winner. He also finished in the top three in the MVP race.

Despite it being the first postseason for most of the Spurs players, they beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games in the second round and knocked out the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in the Western Conference Finals. Unfortunately, their lack of experience came back to haunt them against the Knicks in the Finals.

Wembanyama penned a five-year deal with the Spurs last month. With the Spurs locking in on their franchise players on long-term deals, they will be more than ready to go one better next year.
