Cody Rhodes got severely injured in his main event match with Randy Orton last Saturday at WrestleMania 42. WWE said in its statement via Jackie Redmond that Rhodes needed three sutures to his face and four staples to the back of his head. Redmond added that the impact of Orton hitting the Punt kick on Rhodes damaged the latter’s orbital socket to a degree that his eye remained shut for a long while.

Redmond also said that ‘The QB1’ wasn’t medically cleared to compete and the timetable for his return was up in the air. Rhodes recently posted an update on his gruesome-looking eye injury via Instagram Stories, where he noted doctors telling him that he wouldn’t lose his eye. He called it the most positive yet absurd thing he’s ever heard in a doctor’s office.

Despite many fans thinking that the Punt kick from Orton turned Rhodes’ eye into a mess, it’s not the case. In fact, it was caused by a punch that ‘The Viper’ landed on Rhodes right before getting poked in the eye by ‘The American Nightmare’. Rhodes’ eye swelled up, and the gnarly cut had started leaking blood by the time Rhodes got the pinfall victory over his wrestling mentor.

Cody Rhodes made an unannounced appearance on Raw this past Monday to confront CM Punk. The erstwhile EVP of AEW turned up with an absolutely grody black eye. Those men would then go back and forth about their WrestleMania match outcomes, with Rhodes acting surprised over Punk still in high spirits despite suffering a gut-wrenching loss to Roman Reigns.

‘The Best in the World’ explained to Rhodes that the latter beat his longtime friend and mentor at WrestleMania and that’s why he was having conflicted feelings about his win. Meanwhile, Punk lost to someone he had hated for years. Punk then asked Rhodes to focus on the road ahead of him and asserted the importance of staying at the top, while the Chicagoan would have to stay ready because one never knows when a championship opportunity will fall out of the sky.

‘The Second City Saint’ made a pointed stare at Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE title before leaving. It made ‘The Prodigal Son’ utter, “Just say when,” with Punk’s back turned on Rhodes. It’d be interesting to see when WWE decides to pull the trigger on the Punk vs. Rhodes feud.

Pat McAfee opted out of the Cody Rhodes/Randy Orton feud due to negative fan reactions

It’s a well-known fact that the wrestling fans loathed the unsolicited involvement of Pat McAfee in a story that had nearly two decades of history tied to it—the Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes saga. McAfee’s promos trashing the current state of WWE under Rhodes didn’t help the cause, as it was merely the tip of the iceberg with lukewarm WrestleMania ticket sales also making it to WWE TV as part of McAfee’s integration into the mix.

McAfee was revealed to be the one who had been in Orton’s ear since he brutally attacked Rhodes on SmackDown two weeks after the Elimination Chamber PLE. ‘The Apex Predator’ stated that McAfee made him realize who he truly was and the evils he needed to tap into for becoming a 15-time world champion in WWE. But it all went haywire for both Orton and McAfee on D-Day.

‘The Legend Killer’ dropped the former NFL punter with an RKO to end their alliance. Rhodes took advantage of a distracted Orton and hit the Cross Rhodes on him to retain the title. McAfee is no longer a part of the Orton/Rhodes story, which is expected to continue after Orton brought back the Punt kick to stand tall in the closing shots of WrestleMania Saturday.

As noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Pat McAfee dropped out of the storyline owing to the intense fan backlash. It was the key factor for the College GameDay host to decide he wouldn’t be continuing. This, in turn, also means that the once-rumored celebrity tag team match pitting Cody Rhodes and Jelly Roll against Randy Orton and Pat McAfee at the Backlash PLE is now off.
