Carnell Tate who is a freshman wide receiver at Ohio State University suffered a tragic personal loss last night. His mother was shot around 2 AM in the Garfield Park neighborhood in Chicago. Police reported multiple rounds were fired at a woman in the drive-by. Later on the woman was identified to be Ashley Griggs who is Carnell Tate’s mother. Four more people were present at the scene of the crime and were also shot but managed to escape with minor injuries. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Harrison Police District.
Ashley Griggs was transferred to the hospital immediately but unfortunately, she could not survive and died of injuries. It has been released now that Griggs was shot at by a moving car.
She was confirmed to be Carnell Tate’s mother after being identified by Andrew Homes who is a community activist. Griggs was first examined by a Cook County Medical Examiner. The rest of the people in the car did not have any serious issues and had no life-threatening scare.
Carnell Tate’s mother passes away in a tragic incident
Ohio State University has issued a statement following this indent. They also said that the coaches and staff will be supporting Tate in any way possible during this tough position.
“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother. Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened, and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time,” Ohio State said in a statement. Carnell Tate too broke his silence on the unfortunate death of his mother. The 18-year-old wide receiver posted a story on his official Instagram account thanking everyone for their “love and support.” He wrote, “Thanks everyone for the love and support and to those that reached out.”
Angelina Griggs who is the daughter of Ashley Griggs also released a statement confirming that an investigation is being carried out at the moment. She also revealed that the family would not make any further until the investigation is over. Carnell Tate signed for the Buckeyes in June 2022 and has built up quite a reputation as a prodigious wide receiver within the camp. He stands at 6 feet 2 inches, weighs about 180 pounds, and has all the makings of becoming a top-quality NFL WR in future.
