“They offered me Pedro Munhoz, but I’m just going to wait for Dillashaw”: Cory Sandhagen turns down short notice fight against Pedro Munhoz over T J Dillashaw
Cory Sandhagen reveals that the UFC offered him a short-notice fight against Pedro Munhoz but the contender decided to wait for his original opponent T J Dillashaw instead. T J recently was forced out of the fight due to an injury above his eye.
Cory Sandhagen was scheduled to fight against Dillashaw in his comeback fight from the ban. Fans were very excited to see Cory and Dillashaw back in the octagon but bad luck caused the fight to be canceled temporarily. T J got injured in his training that led to a cut above his eye forcing him to pull out. Recently the Sandman made an appearance on the show with James Lynch where he revealed he would rather wait for Dillashaw to return.
In the interview, Cory speaks about how he got to know that the fight was canceled. “Yeah, I think I only found out a day before you guys did. I found out on Monday. They just told me he was out because he had a cut,” Sandhagen said to James Lynch.
“That was pretty much all that they told me. Then I was like okay, well I know June has a couple of main events open. Then they told me June doesn’t have a couple of main events open, so now we’re shooting for July,” continued to say.
Cory Sandhagen and T J Dillashaw to likely fight in July
After the former champion made it clear that he was not available for the fight, the promotion decided to matchup Cory with Pedro Munhoz but the Sandman decided to wait for T J to return. In the interview, Sandhagen explains why he made that decision. He is coming off a flying knee knockout victory against Frankie Edgar from last February.
“Yeah, they offered me Munhoz, but I’m just going to wait for Dillashaw to be honest with you,” Sandhagen said. “I think that’s a fair decision to make and it’s only a couple of months pushback, so no problem.” With the Sandhagen and Munhoz fight not happening, UFC Vegas 26 will be headlined by Michelle Waterson and Marina Rodriguez.
