The 27-year-old however was quicker than some legendary batsmen. He surpassed Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Viv Richards and took 82 innings to reach this landmark behind South Africa’s Hashim Amla who holds this record in 81 innings. He also became the first Pakistani cricketer to complete the runs in less that 100 innings. He is the 15th player from Pakistan to achieve this feat. He was just 15 runs away from 4000 runs. He scored 57 runs off 72 balls against the Aussies and then got trapped by Mitchell Swepson. Despite Babar Azam’s milestone, Pakistan lost the match by 88 runs after failing to chase Australia’s 314 target.

List of players who scored the fastest 4000 runs in ODI:

Hashim Amla – 81 innings
Babar Azam- 82 innings
Viv Richards- 88 innings
Joe Root-91 innings
Virat Kohli-93 innings
David Warner-93 innings
Quinton de Kock- 94 innings
Shikhar Dhawan-95 innings

While looking back on the match, Babar Azam said: “We wanted to restrict them to under 300. But we dint start well in the first ten overs, but we restricted them well in the end. I thought we lost grip when I got out. It wasn’t easy for the new batsmen, but unfortunately, I got out and they got the momentum. When your main players aren’t available, you have to back the young players. The debutants did well though. We will discuss the mistakes we made and look to not repeat it in the next game.”
