Dhananjaya de Silva gets out
Sri Lanka is in the driver’s seat in the first Test against West Indies riding on century partnerships between Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne before Dhananjaya de Silva joined the latter for a solid partnership. Winning the toss, the hosts decided to bat first and put up a daunting 386 run total on the board.
While skipper Karunaratne top-scored with a stunning century, Dhananjaya de Silva and Nissanka chipped in with half-centuries. Roston Chase picked up five wickets as Jomel Warrican joined him with three wickets to his name. Although Shanon Gabriel picked just a couple of wickets, he was impressive as he broke both the century stands.

Dhananjaya de Silva looked solid as he went on to score a well-worked 61 off 95 balls before he was dismissed in the most peculiar fashion. Dhananjaya lost his wicket in the 95th over to Windies’ quick Gabriel. The 30-year-old tried to stop the ball from hitting the stumps after he almost played on Gabriel’s delivery onto the stumps.
Unfortunately for the hosts, De Silva accidentally dislodged the bails with his bat in the process and had to depart as a consequence. Notably, it is the second time Dhananjaya de Silva has been dismissed hit wicket in Test cricket. He is also only the second Sri Lankan batter after Romesh Kaluwitharana to be dismissed via hit wicket twice in Test matches.
In reply to Sri Lanka’s humongous first innings total, the visitors have slumped to 113 for six wickets at the end of the second day’s play. Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite is the top scorer for the side with his 41 run innings while Ramesh Mendis leads the charge for the islanders with three wickets. The Windies hopes now rest on the shoulders of Kyle Mayers and Jason Holder who are in the middle holding down the fort.
