IPL 2022: 3 players Gujarat Titans can sign as a replacement for Jason Roy

IPL 2022: 3 players Gujarat Titans can sign as a replacement for Jason Roy

Jason Roy

Jason Roy has withdrawn from the IPL in 2022 citing bio-bubble fatigue. The dynamic English opener informed the Gujarat Lions of his decision earlier. Jason Roy, the South African-born cricketer who had also been the base price of IPL 2022, had been acquired by the new franchise for two crores. Jason Roy’s absence from the Titans will come as a shock since the 2019 World Cup winner was in the best form of his life, scoring 303 runs in six matches at the recently-concluded PSL 2022, averaging 50.50, including two half-centuries representing the Quetta Gladiators. Although Gujarat hasn’t named a replacement yet, they have some excellent options available.

Here are three players who can replace Jason Roy:

Suresh Raina

It was unfortunate that no franchise was interested in Suresh Raina, even at his base price of INR 2 crore. Mr IPL has not performed as well as he should in the last two seasons. Having missed the 2020 tournament due to personal reasons and managing only 160 runs in 12 matches at an average of just 17.77 in 2021, he failed to make an impact. Yet, the veteran cricketer still ranks fourth in the history of the IPL with 5528 runs from 205 matches averaged at 32.51 and a strike rate of 136.76, including a century and 39 half-centuries. He would likely be seen in action for Gujarat in different colours and setup this time as Raina captained the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in the 2016 and 2017 editions.

Dawid Malan

The Englishman is arguably England’s best T20I batsman and has been the top batsman for quite a while in this format. Unfortunately, he got no bids during the IPL mega auction. In the mega auction, Malan entered his base price of 1.50 crore after being released by the Punjab Kings. In the ICC T20I Rankings, he is currently ranked fourth among batters, and this achievement might force the Gujarat-based franchise to look hard at alternatives to his England colleague. Although he did not get a lot of chances last season, the middle-order sensation could be one of the candidates to fill in the big shoes of Jason Roy.

Aaron Finch

Despite leading Australia to victory at the Dubai World Cup a few months ago, Aaron Finch went unsold at the IPL mega auction. No team wanted to pay his INR 1.5 crore base price. The key to Finch’s success is his large amount of experience, having played for eight franchises in the marquee tournament between 2010 and 2020. He is currently the fifth-highest run-scorer in T20Is, having scored 2,686 runs from 88 matches. This means that the Australian white-ball captain could be a great replacement for Jason Roy for the upcoming season of TATA IPL 2022.
