MS Dhoni is one of the greatest and beloved cricketers of all time. In India, he is worshipped as a God of cricket because this captain has lead the team that has won all the major ICC trophies- ICC T20 World Cup (2007), ICC World Cup (2011) and ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.
On August 15, 2020, India’s most successful captain had retired from all forms of cricket. But he still captains Chennai Super Kings in IPL and will continue to play in 2023, but that might be his last appearance in the IPL because Dhoni is celebrating his 41st birthday today, on July 7.
Earlier, just before the start of the IPL, Dhoni stepped down from captaincy and the its reins were handed to Ravindra Jadeja but soon Jadeja also relinquished it midway and Dhoni took the responsibility again. But IPL 2022 wasn’t a good season for CSK because they ended up 9th in the points table.
Dhoni kept the wickets and always used to give his suggestion to the bowlers which most of the time have been successful. But apart from all the helping from behind the stumps, Dhoni had made headlines for hilarious comments from behind the stumps and for scolding the bowlers when they don’t execute the plans well and all such things. Below is the list of five epic MS Dhoni stump-mic moments involving as India and CSK captain.
MS Dhoni’s hilarious stump mic moments
1. What’s Dhoni’s secret code for ‘Doosra’? It’s ‘Taarak Mehta’
Dhoni wanted Ravichandran Ashwin to bowl ‘Doosra’. But he didn’t tell the bowler clearly but used the name of a popular TV show’s name. The commentators picked it up and explained that Dhoni used the name of an Indian show ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashmah’.
“Isko Taarak Mehta daal,” Dhoni’s comment was caught on stump mic.
2. Sreeshath lost focus and Dhoni cheekily reminded him that a game is happening right now
Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan revealed a funny moment where Sreeshanth was not so focussed on the field. And Dhoni said:
“Oye Sree girlfriend nahi hain udhar, idhar aaja thoda” (Sreeshanth your girlfriend is not there, come back here).
3. Dhoni even reminded Suresh Raina about his line and length
This happened at the 2015 World Cup when Suresh Raina was bowling to the left-handed batsman William Porterfield. Generally, southpaws find it difficult to play the off-spin bowlers and Raina’s line and length were not accurate. Dhoni reminded Raina of the same behind the stumps.
“Woh volleyball ki tarah khada hua hain beech mein” (he is standing in a volleyball pose).
4. Dhoni’s hilarious comment left Raina and Jadeja laughing
This happened during an IPL match between CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore last year where the former defeated the latter. Dhoni’s advice helped Jadeja pick up the wickets of Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. During the foreign players’ stay at the crease, Dhoni and Jadeja had been communicating in Hindi but after their wicket, when Harshal Patel walked out to bat, Dhoni said:
“Ab Hindi me nahi bol sakta hoon” (Now I can’t talk to you in Hindi).
Jadeja and Raina laughted hearing this.
5. Dhoni reminded Jadeja of the field setting
This incident took place during India’s tour of New Zealand in 2013/14. Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling had troubled the Indian bowlers with their massive partnership of 352 runs. Dhoni wasn’t impressed with Jadeja’s line and length during some overs. He commented then:
“Jaddu thoda off mein daal. Pujara ko udhar taali bajane nahi rakha hain” (Jadeja bowl on the off stump. Pujara isn’t standing there just to clap).
