Axar Patel has been an important figure in Delhi Capitals and this year, he will be the deputy of David Warner. Warner was made the captain in the absence of Rishabh Pant who survived a horrific car crash last December and will miss the entire IPL season.

Axar has been on good form in the shortest format in the last couple of years, and now that he was assigned the deputy role, he feels that it’s a reward for all the hard work he has done over the last few seasons.

In my opinion, if you have gotten this role that means you are growing as a senior player. It’s like getting a reward for all that you’ve done for the team. I’m excited about this role,” Patel said in a video posted on DC’s Twitter handle.

The all-rounder from Gujarat scored 182 runs and scalped six wickets in 13 matches last year. In total, he played 122 matches, collected 1,135 runs, and scalped 101 wickets. The bowling all-rounder was at first a regular face of the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), but Delhi Capitals roped him in the 2019 IPL auction.

Delhi Capitals will start their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 at the Ekana Sports City in Lucknow. They will be playing their home game, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, against defending champions Gujarat Titans on April 4.

Last season, Delhi Capitals won seven and lost seven in 14 matches. Despite being a part of the cash-rich league since the inception of IPL in 2008 (as Delhi Daredevils), DC are yet to win the coveted cup. They have just once reached the final, in 2020, but lost to Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians, who lifted their record fifth title. They won the match by five wickets while chasing a 157-run target.
