Pakistani batter Azhar Ali has announced that he will retire from Test cricket following the conclusion of the ongoing Test series against England. The final match will be played from December 17 in Karachi. He made the announcement on the eve of the final game.

While announcing his decision, he said: “It has been a great honour and privilege for me to represent my country at the highest level. Deciding on when to call it a day is always tough, but, after contemplating deeply, I realised that this is the right time for me to retire from Test cricket.”

“There are many people who I am grateful to in this strenuous, yet beautiful journey. I want to make a special mention of my family without whose sacrifices; I would not have been where I am today. My parents, wife, siblings, and children have been my strength throughout,” he added.

Azhar Ali, who warmed the bench in the second Test match, is uncertain to play in the third match. Captain Babar Azam has already confirmed that they are yet to make a decision and everyone will only get to know it on match day. With the series already won by England, Ali might get a farewell game.

While the 37-year-old also thanked his father for believing in him, he also expressed gratitude towards his late mother, whose sacrifices means a lot to him. “I’d like to thank my parents. My dad, who believed in me more than I did. And my mother, who’s no longer around. Her sacrifices meant the world to me. I miss her,” he said.

Ali will conclude his Test career as one of the greatest batters for his country in the concerned format. He is the fifth-highest run-getter for Pakistan in Test cricket. He has 7030 runs in 95 matches, averaging 42.60. He also scored 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries in the process.
