England needed to defend 170 but they kept losing wickets until the only left were No. 9 batter Charlie Dean and Freya Davis. They needed 50 runs to win and Dean was rather playing like she could help her team a win until Deepti Sharma mankaded her, snatching the victory at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Indians were asked to bat first, Smriti Mandhana‘s 50 and and Deepti’s 68 not out helped India post 169 all out. Four India batters were dismissed on duck while others failed to reach double digit scores apart from Mandhana, Deepti and Pooja Vastrakar (22).

England’s situation was the same. Renuka Singh broke England’s back, scalping four wickets while the great Jhulan Goswami, who was playing her last match of her career, claimed two wickets.

Dean had played 80 balls and scored 47 runs with five fours until in 45th over, as she was venturing out of the crease too much, Deepti wasted no time and calmly took the bails off, started yet again the debate over Mankading.

“Not happy with the result, we bowled really well, we just needed a bigger partnership. The last dismissal divides opinion. I’m not a fan but it depends how India feel about it. It’s within the rules, hopefully doesn’t take the shine off the summer,” said English skipper Amy Jones at the post-match presentation ceremony.

It’s well-known that mankading dismissal is controversial even of its being included in the rule book as a legal dismissal. India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur lauded Deepti’s game awareness, England Men’s batter Alex Hales supported Deepti, said the batter at the non-striker’s end is equally responsible to not leave the crease until the ball is thrown. While Indians have come together in support of Deepti, English fraternity is questioning the “spirit of cricket” and the Twitter war has started between the supporters and criticisers.
