The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently released a list for bowlers in the IPL auction who were reported for illegal action, but not banned. There were 7 players, with some big names like Chirag Gandhi, Tarun Kotian and Rohan Kunnummal. Manish Pandey along with another player was banned from bowling as well. A prominent IPL bowler who has played for India was accidentally added as well.
Chetan Sakariya, who has played 1 ODI and 2 T20Is for India, was one of the 7 players in the list. This left many people in the Saurashtra Cricket Association confused as he had never been flagged for suspect action. The bowler was then removed after the SCA contacted the BCCI.
Jaydev Shah, the president of the SCA, informed Cricbuzz that the BCCI had confused him with LR Chethan, a player from Karnataka. The BCCI claimed the error was due to a miscommunication and they would rectify it right away.
It was a sort of miscommunication and error, and Chetan has never been called, and he is not on that list. I understand that the name of a Karnataka bowler should have been there, and the IPL is addressing the issue. The franchises are also being duly informed.Jaydev Shah to Cricbuzz
Sakariya has priced himself at ₹50 Lakhs in the IPL auction. He made his mark in the 2021 IPL with a great season with Rajasthan Royals. In 2022 Sakariya was bought by Delhi Capitals for ₹4.2 crore but played only 5 matches in 2 seasons.
Chetan Sakariya’s career so far
Sakariya made his debut for Saurashtra in 2018 against Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but made his name in 2020 for his performances in domestic cricket. After scouting him, Sakariya was purchased by Rajasthan Royals in 2021 for ₹1.2 Crore.
In his first IPL season, he picked up 14 wickets in 14 matches. He was released the next season due to the 2022 IPL Mega Auction, but was purchased by Delhi Capitals. He didn’t get much game time unfortunately, playing only 3 matches in 2022 and 2 in 2023.
He has been an important player for Saurashtra in their 2019 and 2023 Ranji Trophy triumphs., where he picked up a combined 55 wickets in the two seasons. He also picked a fifer in the 2019 Irani Cup, unfortunately in a losing cause.
