Dhoni said people used to think that No.7 was a lucky number for him but he chose it for his jersey simply because he was born on the 7th of July.

So it's the 7th day of the 7th month, that was the reason.
Dhoni said during an interaction held by India Cements.

He further said that instead of contemplating much on which number he would choose for his jersey, he picked up his birthdate. Thala also revealed people kept telling him interesting things related to No.7, that his birth year 1981 has seven (8-1= 7).
