“Makes no sense”- Australian greats baffled by Aaron Finch’s not opening despite Cameron Green’s absence in T20 World Cup
Cameron Green
Needless to say, Cameron Green is the rising Australian star. In the absence of David Warner, Green opened Australia’s innings alongside Aaron Finch against India in the T20I series.
Despite Green’s terrific performance against the Men in Blue, he won’t be there in the T20 World Cup. He wouldn’t be added to the squad until there’s an injury.
Green has been included in the squad for the T20I series against West Indies and England. Warner and Green are opening now, while regular but out-of-form opener Finch has been batting at No.4. This strategy has baffled the Aussie greats Mark Waugh and Brad Haddin.
“Well, I am not sure (about the selections),” Waugh said on Fox Cricket. “I mean Cameron Green was outstanding opening the batting in India.
“The thing is he’s not in the World Cup squad, so if you’re preparing for the World Cup why would you open with him? Wouldn’t Aaron Finch be opening the batting if you were preparing for the World Cup, so I find it a little confusing.
“I’ve got no doubt about it, if Cameron Green is in our World Cup squad it is a better squad. He’s that good a player. At the moment, you can only get in if there’s an injury so who knows what’s happening there with Marcus Stoinis, Mitch Marsh coming up from injury but it’s interesting isn’t that he’s opening tonight.”

“It makes no sense to be playing Cameron Green”- Brad Haddin
Former Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin agreed with Mark Waugh. He said the Australian team is only playing Cameron Green as an opener to win the series against West Indies and that “it makes no sense otherwise to be playing Cameron Green when he hasn’t been selected in this original squad.”
Mark Waugh then added that Australian selectors are going to stay loyal to those players who are selected for the World Cup but “Cameron Green’s performance in India has caught everyone on the top“.
