In the Commonwealth Games 2022, after India bagged their first point by defeating Pakistan by eight wickets, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur scripted a record. The match took place on Sunday, July 31 at Edgbaston, Birmingham in the UK.

Indian bowlers dominated Pakistan’s batters and restricted them to just 99 runs. While chasing, opener Smriti Mandhana charged with her bat and smashed 63. India won the match comfortably with 38 balls to spare. With this win, captain Harmanpreet Kaur broke former men’s captain MS Dhoni’s record of most T20I wins by an Indian skipper.

It was 42nd win in T20I for the 33-year-old captain. She has guided Team India in 71 T20I, out of which India won 42 and lost 26 and three ended in no-result.

Dhoni had guided Team India to their first victory in the first ever T20 World Cup in 2007 by beating Pakistan in the final match. Out of 72 matches, he guided the team to 41 wins. Dhoni’s successor and former India captain Virat Kohli has a better win percentage. He led India in 50 matches out of which India won 30 and lost 16. But now, Harmanpreet has surpassed them both.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Harmanpreet Kaur said, “We were quite positive. Even in the last game, we played good cricket in patches and everybody knew that today’s game was important for us as we would be able to carry the momentum into the next matches. The way our team played today, I was quite pleased.”

Both India and Pakistan lost their opening match. While India almost defeated the reigning T20 champions Australia in the curtain-raiser match, Pakistan faced defeat from the hands of Barbados. Now, Indian women will face Barbados on August 3. India, Barbados and Australia have two points but India is leading the table because of their net run rate.
