Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting stalwart Ruturaj Gaikwad has turned down the opportunity to feature in the most elite ICC event i.e. World Test Championship Final. Gaikwad, who was selected as one of the four standbys, has turned down the opportunity for his marriage with his rumoured girlfriend Sayali Sanjeev. 

The Maharashtra cricketer has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be getting married in the first week of June and hence cannot fly to England. Gaikwad is reportedly getting married on June 3 or 4 and hence will be able to fly to England after June 5. Meanwhile, India head coach Rahul Dravid suggested announcing a replacement considering the match starts on 7 June.

With Gaikwad opting out, the BCCI selection committee after a discussion with the Indian team management has named Yashaswi Jaiswal as Gaikwad’s replacement. According to a report in The Indian Express, Jaiswal has already been told to start practising with the red ball and the young batter can be asked to fly to England anytime soon. 

“He (Jaiswal) will be joining the Indian team as Gaikwad has informed us that he won’t be able to fly due to his marriage. He would be able to join the team post-June 5. (But) Coach Rahul Dravid took a call, asking the selectors to pick a replacement. So, Jaiswal will now fly to London soon,” a BCCI official was quoted saying by the newspaper.

Yashaswi Jaiswal getting selected for the WTC Final comes in as a shot in the arm for the young batter who has been in prolific touch as of late. Apart from piling runs in the Rajni Trophy, Jaiswal also scored heaps of runs in IPL 2023.

The opening batter managed 404 runs in five games in Ranji knockouts while scoring  625 runs in 14 matches in IPL 2023. So, the youngster is a great addition to the squad.
