Former India captain Virat Kohli has completed 14 years in international cricket. He had debuted on August 18th in 2008. He shared a video on his Instagram account which included a slideshow of his ODI cricket journey.
He shared the video with the caption: “14 years ago, it all started and it’s been an honour”. Check the video below:
It all started when Virender Sehwag had got some problems on his ankle which gave a young 19-year-old Kohli a chance to replace Sehwag. Cricket fraternity were nervous about this because they thought if Kohli would be the right fit for the place of Sehwag.
But Kohli, who had just captained the U-19 team to victory, was surrounded by all the buzz and talkings too. However, he didn’t last that long in his debut match against Sri Lanka as he could score only 12 runs off 22 balls.
After his 12, he went up to score 37, 25, 54, and 31 in the five-match ODI series. But then, he had to wait more than one year to play his next match.
Then Indian Premier League‘s Royal Challengers Bangalore signed him but the first season was forgetful for him as he could score just 165 runs in 13 matches. This happended before he made his debut for India.
He made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe on June 12, 2010 while Test debut came against West Indies on June 20, 2011. But he had already established himself as an ODI batter.
He scored his first ton against Sri Lanka in Kolkata on December 24, 2009. For the third wicket, he stitched a 224-run partership with Gautam Gambhir which helped India chase down 316 runs in 48.1 overs. When Gambhir, who had remained unbeaten on 150 runs off 137 balls handed the award to Kohli for his maiden ton (107 runs off 114 balls). Kohli, despite his lean form in current times, has 43 ODI ton to his name.
