Former India women’s cricketer Jhulan Goswami has confirmed that she won’t participate in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WIPL). She said that had the WPL happened two years ago, she would have played.
“I think it’s a bit late now. If it had happened two years ago, I would have made it. I think it’s too late for me,” Goswami told in an interaction with Viacom18 Sports on Wednesday (January 25).
Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra was also present there and he tried to persuade the 40-year-old to make a comeback after retirement.
But Goswami answered: “Thank you, Akash, had you been the coach of the India team then I could have played for one or two more years. But unfortunately, this didn’t happen (chuckles).”

Check how Twitter reacted to Jhulan Goswami’s confirmation of not taking part in the highly-anticipated WPL. At the same time, other fans want former India women’s captain Mithali Raj to follow in Goswami’s footsteps. Raj, who once used to amass heaps of runs across all formats, failed to do so in the matches before her retirement last year.

In that show, Goswami also shed light on the importance of WPL. “Definitely, it will help you financially at the same time playing with the stalwarts of women’s cricket is definitely going to help our young budding talented cricketers.”
Meanwhile, yesterday, the BCCI revealed the five teams that will own the WPL teams. They are the Adani Sportsline, Indiawin Sports, Royal Challengers Sports, JSW GMR Cricket, and Capri Global Holdings. The Adani group made the highest bid of INR 1289 crore, followed by the Mumbai-based Indiawin Sports (INR 912.99 crore).
Viacom18 won media rights for INR 951 crore. The inaugural season is expected to start in February. But the BCCI is yet to announce the dates for the players’ auction as well as for the event.
