After Australia’s dismal  batting display on a tough pitch of Chennai, Michael Vaughan was quick to defend the Aussies. In the fifth match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, India bowled out Australia for only 199 runs. Vaughan blamed the batting performance on the pitch.

Vaughan claimed on X the only reason India are favorites for the World Cup is because of the pitches. The pitch heavily supported the spinners and batters struggled against Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. The spin trio picked up a total of six wickets out of the ten.

In 2021, England toured India for a 4 match Test series and were welcomed with pitches that helped spinners. Batters from both sides struggled to face all spinners and the pitches were heavily criticized. One of the people that criticized the pitches was England ex-Captain, Michael Vaughan. They claimed the pitches were “below standard” as they didn’t offer balance between the ball and the bat.

Fans defended India, saying India are favorites on any pitches and doesn’t need home advantage to be competitors. Others found it funny how Vaughan’s nation won the World Cup on boundary count, but yet he was complaining about home advantage.
