Mohammad Amir is all set to become a British citizen in 2024. This will allow him to play for England as well as in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While Amir straightway confirmed he won’t play for England ever, he might be thinking of playing in the IPL.
Pakistani players are not allowed to play in IPL due to the ongoing political tension between the two nations. They used to play in the inaugural season in 2008 but were banned after 2009.
Amir has been living in England post-retirement in 2020 and will complete four years in the country but with a passport. The 31-year-old announced a shocking retirement in 2020 citing mental health. On the prospect of playing in the IPL, Amir said that nothing could be said beforehand and he will work accordingly to what happens in the future.
“No, I haven’t interacted with him (Shah Rukh Khan). There are so many Indian fans…no ones says it openly. You also know about the present condition. But everyone wants Pakistani players to play IPL. Some players also say this. No one talks about it openly,” Amir told ARY News.
Mohammad Amir may join Azhar Mahmood in IPL
After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned Pakistani players, Azhar Mahmood got the chance to feature in the IPL in 2013 owing to his turning into a British citizen. Mahmood initially played for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), followed by a stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It will be interesting to see if Mohammad Amir also does the same or not.
For Pakistan, Amir played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 50 T20Is, scalping 119, 81, and 59 wickets respectively. His last match for Pakistan was in August 2020 in a T20I against England.
