Wankhede Stadium was built in 1974 after a dispute between the Bombay Cricket Club and the Cricket Club of India. It is named after politician Shreshrao Wankhede, who was a prominent member of the BCA. When it was built, it could host up to 45,000 fans, but after a renovation in 2011, the attendance went down to 32,108.
It has hosted 23 ODIs since 1987 as has been played at this venue and has also hosted 6 ICC ODI World Cup Matches. The most iconic match played in this stadium is the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup final, when India lifted their 2nd World Cup title. It is also the home ground of Indian Premier League side, Mumbai Indians. The stadium also serves as the headquarters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Mumbai Cricket Association.
The first ODI match it hosted was when Sri Lanka toured India on 17th January, 1987, while the last ODI played on the ground was on 17th March, 2023 against Australia. It has also hosted 26 Test matches and 8 T20 matches.
