India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came out in support of Australia’s Alex Carey when he pulled off a stumping to dismiss England’s Jonny Bairstow during the final day of the second Test of the Ashes series at the Lord’s. Carey’s actions received flak on social media as well as from spectators at the stadium who started booing Pat Cummins and Co. over this controversial dismissal.
The incident happened during the 52nd over. Cameron Green was the bowler and he threw a bouncer which Bairstow ducked. But he left his crease the moment after the ball went past him. Bairstow might be thinking the ball was “dead” but Carey from behind the stumps caught the ball and threw it at the stumps.
Australia went for the appeal and the umpire went upstairs and shortly after came the big ‘OUT’ on the display board to the perplexion of Bairstow and his team. After Bairstow’s departure, Stuart Broad came to bat and he warned Carey that this action will be remembered.
Nevertheless of the drama, it was a fair dismissal. As per ICC, the batter is not allowed to leave the crease until the ball is deemed as ‘dead’. Replays showed that the 33-year-old was leaving the crease a couple of times also which Carey had noticed.
Ravichandran Ashiwn applauds Alex Carey’s game awareness
Social media went into a frenzy mode moment after this dismissal. Many called out Australians and the umpire ruining the ‘Spirit of Cricket‘. The crowd at the Lord’s started chanting “Cheat”. But Ravichandran Ashwin backed Alex Carey for his presence of mind and game awareness and slammed those who are for no reason deeming his action as unfair.
“We must get one fact loud and clear. The keeper would never have a dip at the stumps from that far out in a test match unless he or his team have noticed a pattern of the batter leaving his crease after leaving a ball like Bairstow did. We must applaud the game smarts of the individual rather than skewing it towards unfair play or spirit of the game,” Ashwin tweeted.
