Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came into the mix for the ODI World Cup after Axar Patel missed out of it due to injury. He was not part of the original squad list but Patel’s absence created a space for the veteran spinner to play yet another World Cup. Ashwin, however, hinted that he might be playing his last World Cup.
The management had eyes on Ashwin as well as Yuzvendra Chahal before announcing the squad and even captain Rohit Sharma hinted at keeping both the spinners in the mix. And as Ashwin was added to the squad list for the three-match ODI series against Australia, fans started foreseeing Ashwin in the squad list for the World Cup and the Axar Patel void created that opportunity.
“Being in a good space, and enjoying this tournament will keep me in good stead. This could be my last World Cup for India, so enjoying the tournament is of utmost importance,” Ashwin said on Star Sports.
He was a part of the 2011 ODI World Cup that lifted the trophy. Ashwin and Kohli are the only two members from that 2011 squad who will play in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
Yuvraj Singh wants Yuzvendra Chahal’s inclusion in the squad instead of Ravichandran Ashwin
However, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh wanted to see Yuzvendra Chahal in the squad instead of Ravichandran Ashwin. India, undoubtedly is filled with world-class spinners and it creates a headache for the selectors to choose them for the important tournaments.
As per PTI, Yuvraj pointed out that the only thing missing from the squad is a leg spinner. He said he was keen to see Washington Sundar on the side if Yuzvendra Chahal is not playing. However, the 2011 ODI World winner understood that the reason why India picked up Ashwin might be because they wanted an experienced bowler in the squad.
