Showing a red card to a player when he/she ends up committing a foul in different sports has become frequent. But not in cricket, because a red card was not a thing in the game until the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) changed everything. CPL introduced the concept for the first time this year and who received the first red card?

It’s none other than veteran West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, who was handed down the card on August 27th. A player receives a red card as a result of team’s slow over rate.

This happened during a match between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKN) and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR). Because TKR later failed to complete their 17th and 18th overs on time, they had to call back a fielder into the 30-yard circle. But the Knight Riders even could not complete the 19th over in time, and as a consequence umpire brought out the red card.

Now Kieron Pollard, the captain, had the task of choosing which player should leave the field and he chose Sunil Narine. Pollard chose Narine only because the spinner had completed his full quota of four overs.

Kieron Pollard enraged at the red-card rule, deemed it absolutely ridiculous

Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard was certainly not happy with what happened with his team. He deemed the red-card rule as ridiculous.

To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done. We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalized for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous,” Pollard said.

Meanwhile, during the match between SKN and TRK, the former scored 178/5 in 20 overs. TKR chased down the target in 17.1 overs to win the match by six wickets.
