Indian cricket team’s batting coach Vikram Rathour has made an interesting statement on opening batsman KL Rahul’s future in the Indian team. The right handed opening batsman has had a poor run of form so far in the ongoing T20 world cup held in Australia. He has not been able to get into double figures in both the innings he has played in the tournament. It has been a major concern for the Indian team, especially with other big guns like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Surya Kumar Yadav going out all guns blazing.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of India’s match against South Africa in Group B, Rathour said that the team management is ready to show faith in KL Rahul despite his poor run of form. There have been speculations of including the explosive southpaw Rishabh Pant in place of Rahul, but Rathour has labelled this as a rumour.
Rathour said, “We are not going to play Pant in place of KL Rahul, he will open for India….11 hi log khel sakte hai. I understand Rishabh is an extremely good player, we know what he can do. The talk with him from our end is that he should be ready. He should be ready mentally and physically and he is practising hard. He may get a chance soon, I am sure he will be ready when he gets the chance.”

Despite India winning their opening encounter against Pakistan, there was a serious hiccup at the start of the Indian innings as both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul lost their wickets cheaply. Commenting on this, former Pakistani speed-star Shoaib Akhtar said the Indian openers looked “scared” against the Pakistani pace attack. He said, “India’s openers are looking intimidated and scared. Rohit needs to calm down as a captain, his batting is bearing the brunt of it. KL Rahul is getting trapped because of his extra focused approach, he shouldn’t do so.”
With the Men in Blue ready to lock horns with the Proteas in their next match in Perth, it will be interesting to see whether both the Indian openers pay heed to these suggestions or not. This is more applicable for KL Rahul, who seems to have lost his touch, which made him a dependable player in the Indian squad and helped him to earn his place as the vice captain of the side.
With South African bowlers ready to show their ruthless side when they take on the Indians, it will be interesting to see how the Indian batsmen, especially KL Rahul deals with the might of top rated pacers like Nortje and Rabada. It is a great opportunity for Rahul to provide a solid start to his team at the top of the order, and fans will be eager to find out whether he grasps it with both hands or not.
