India gained its first point in the Commonwealth Games 2022 by thrasing arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets (with 38 balls remaining) on Sunday, July 31 at Edgbaston, in Birmingham, UK.

Pakistan had won the toss and opted to bat first. But their decision didn’t prove to be a help as they could give a target of just 100 runs to India. Only Muneeba Ali could score above 30. She played 30 balls to score 32 runs with three boundaries and a six. Apart from Muneeba, Aliya Riaz and Bismah Maroof scored 18 runs and 17 runs respectively.

India responded strongly with openers Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. Verma played nine balls to score 16 runs with two fours and a six before bowler Tuba Hassan sent her back. Hassan bolwed a slower delivery, a flatter and short outside off. Verma attempted to cut it but only managed to get an outside edge. Muneeba Ali, the wicket-keeper, made no mistake and caught it easily.

Sabbhineni Meghana scored 14 runs off 16 balls with two fours and Omaima Sohail dismissed her when she stepped down the track but didn’t get to the pitch of the ball and looked to slog it away. But the ball turned in and went on to shatter the stumps.

Smriti Mandhana was the star batter as she slammed a half-century with eight fours and three sixes. She played an unbeaten knock of 63 runs off 42 balls with an impressive strike rate of 150. She finished India’s innings in style with a six as India bagged its first point with eight wickets victory over Pakistan.
