“Semis in sight”- Twitter reacts as New Zealand register a comfortable victory over Ireland after Lockie Ferguson’s three scalps

New Zealand beat Ireland by 35 runs

New Zealand have got seven points and stayed top on the points table in Group 1 after beating Ireland by 37 runs on Friday [November 4] at the Adelaide Oval. Lockie Ferguson scalped three wickets to restrict the Irish batters to just 150/9.

Earlier, following Kane Williamson‘s 61 runs off 35 balls, and Finn Allen’s quickfire of 18-ball 32 runs, the Kiwis put on 185/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Irish bowler Joshua Little scalped three back-to-back wickets to complete a hat trick, which was also the second one in this year’s T20 World Cup.

Like the Blackcaps, even Ireland got off to a quick start when they stitched a 68-run opening stand. Paul Stirling had scored 37 runs off 27 balls, with three fours and a six, while, Balbirnie added 30 runs from 25 balls when Mitchell Santner broke the partnership in the ninth over.

Santner bowled it slower on length, Balbirnie got an inside edge, and the ball went on to shatter the stumps. In the next over, Ish Sodhi sent Stirling back to the pavilion. Sodhi bowled a googly, which Stirling failed to read, and went for a sweep across the line; the ball rattled the stumps to the relief of the Kiwis.

Harry Tector gave away his wicket to Santner in the 11th over, while Ferguson scalped Gareth Delany’s wicket in the 14th. Following Sodhi’s dismissal of Lorcan Tucker (13 runs off 14 balls), half of the Irish batters were sent to the pavilion for 102 runs.

The Kiwis dismissed the two openers, after which Ireland’s wicket fell like a pack of cards. Tim Southee dismissed Curtis Campher in the 17th over, Ferguson caught and bowled Flonn Hand in the next over, while Southee again got rid of Mark Adair to end their innings. Ireland could reach only 150 and had no overs left to score the left 35 runs.
