“International players playing U-19?”- Twitter slams BCCI as they announce squad for U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, Shefali Verma to lead

Team India players Shefali Verma and Richa Ghosh will be representing the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup team. On Monday, the All-India Women’s Selection Committee picked the squad to announce Verma as the captain and named Shweta Sehrawat the vice-captain.
“The All-India Women’s Selection Committee has picked India U19 Women’s squad for the upcoming bilateral away T20 series against South Africa U19 and the ICC U19 Women’s World Cup,” BCCI said in a statement.
The 18-year-old Shefali is already a well-known name in international cricket. She even represented the Women in Blue in the Commonwealth Games 2022 which India ended as runners-up, losing to England.
Later, she played in the T20 World Cup 2022 and emerged as India’s highest run-scorer with 163 runs from five matches at a strike rate of 158.25. She was also the No. 1 batter in ICC Women’s T20I rankings for a while.
She debuted for the senior national team in at the age of 15 in September 2019 and has represented India in two Tests, 21 ODIs, and 46 T20Is. She will also lead the U19 Indian women’s team in the five T20Is against South Africa. While Ghosh, 19, has played 35 T20Is and 17 ODIs.
Notably, this U-19 T20 World Cup will be held for the first time. It is slated to start from January 14 to January 29 in South Africa. Indian women are placed in Group D consisting of UAE, South Africa, and Scotland.
The top three teams from each group will qualify for the next round Super Six round. The top teams from Super Six will then qualify for the semi-final. The semifinals will take place on January 27 at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom, while the final will be on January 29.
